History of Jiufen

Jiufen in Chinese literally means “nine pieces”. The reason is that, long time ago, there were only nine families living in the small town, hence only nine pieces of daily necessities had to be shipped here. And then during the Japanese occupation, Jiufen gathered lots of people for gold-mining, and this brought up the Jiufen’s bright period.



How to get to Jiufen Village 

By Shuttle bus (highly recommend): To pre-book the direct shuttle service is the most cost-effective way to get from Taipei to Jiufen. It is on sale now, USD 21 per person only!

By public transport: Take No.1062 bus, directly heading to Jiufen and JinGuaShih, at MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing station. / Take a train to Ruifang Station and make a transfer to the bus.

A-Mei Tea House

Drink a cup of Taiwanese tea with local dessert at A-Mei Tea House (阿妹茶樓), one of famous iconic landmark in Jiufen.

Monday to Friday 8:30am-1:30 am

Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-4:00am 


Shengping Theater 

Shengping theater was founded in 1916 and rebuilt in 1934. It was a the biggest theater in Japanese-occupied period.

Open time:

Monday to Friday 9:30am-5:00 pm

Saturday and Sunday 9:30am-6:00pm

**The first Monday of each month is not open.** 



Golden Waterfall

The Golden Waterfall is located on the side of the road from the Jinguashi to the Shuinandong. The water from the Golden Waterfall has a yellow hue, resulting from the heavy metal elements that seep through the old mines and get deposited in the riverbed.

Taro balls

Taro balls with sweet soup is a very iconic street food in Jiufen. There are two famous taro balls shops - A-Ganyi (阿柑姨) and Lai A-Po (賴阿婆). Tasting a bowl of taro balls with sweet potato, green bean, red bean and soy is a blissful thing in Jiufen.


Red vinasse Taiwanese meatball 

Taiwanese meatball (肉圓) is a Taiwanese street food and it is like a giant dumpling because of the translucent dough made of sweet potato starch filled with pork. The red vinasse Taiwanese meatball is filled with pork slices, which is soaked in red vinasse. 




Tsaozaigou (草仔粿) is a very traditional food in Taiwan. The green dough is made by glutinous rice and Chinese mugwort or cudweed, and filled with dried radish. It is sweet and the aroma of herb and pepper full of your mouth.

History of Shifen

Shifen Town is located in the Pingxi district.   There are many sky lantern shops and food stalls around the Shifen railway station. People call it Shifen Old Street. In the Japanese era, the railway was built for transporting coal. Now, the old rail track is still working, but doesn't transport coal anymore.



How to get to Shifen Town

Shifen Waterfall

The Shifen Waterfall, which is near by the Shifen old street, is 40 meter tall and nicknamed as " Niagara waterfalls of Taiwan". Just walking about 20 mins from the Shifen old street then you can see it.

Monday to Sunday 9:00am-05:30 pm

**The open time will be adjusted due to season, please check it before you go there.** 


Sky lantern 

You can wander on the old rail track and release own sky lanterns. The old rail was lined with different kind of sky lantern shops, so choose one which you like, write down your wishes and release the sky lantern into the sky.




Visiting a train run through the middle of Shifen Old Street is the must in Shifen Town. The train will pass by several times a day and close enough to touch. Only in Shifen!

LiuGe BBQ stuffed wings 

What is the most famous street food in the Shifen Old Street? Absolutely is the LiuGe BBQ Stuffed wings. It is a deboned chicken wing, stuffed with rice and wrapped in homemade sauce. You will not forget this flavorful chicken wings.


Peanut roll with ice cream 

Peanut roll with ice cream is one of traditional street food in Taiwan. Peanut shavings are shaved from a huge block of compressed peanuts and wrapped with 2 scoops of ice cream and parsley. 



Rice noodles

Rice noodles are very common and tasty Taiwan cuisine, which are made from rice. Normally, they are available in fresh, frozen, or dried, in various shapes, thicknesses and textures.
